DEATH OF SOLDIERS IN SIACHEN

DEFENCE be pleased to state:-




(a) whether a number of soldiers have lost their lives in Siachen due to environmental and other factors;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the number of soldiers killed during each of the last three years and the current year; and

(c) the measures taken / proposed to be taken by the Government to protect the lives of soldiers deployed therein as well as maintain the strategic importance of the region?

(a) & (b): The details of fatal casualties in Siachen during the last three years and the current year are as under:-

(c) The troops of Indian Army deployed in this region are suitably equipped, trained and organized to face the operational challenges and carry out their mandated tasks. All efforts are made to minimise the casualties by providing suitable infrastructure, habitat, medical support and casualty evacuation procedures.

Government is cognizant of the strategic importance of Siachen and requisite forces have been deployed in the area keeping in view the threat perception, ground situation and other operational aspects.
